Shoppers who need a minivan but don't want to overextend their budget should take a look at the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan. With its versatile seating and cargo area, you get enough room to haul people and gear. Capable of holding up to seven people, the newest Dodge Grand Caravan offers plenty of cabin space and features at a price that most of its rivals can't beat.

Trim Levels

The 2017 lineup for the Grand Caravan includes four trims: the SE, SE Plus, SXT, and GT. On the base SE, you get heated mirrors, tri-zone climate control, and other perks for a starting MSRP of $24,995. With a price of $27,695, the SE Plus comes with an upholstery upgrade, Bluetooth connectivity, and other perks. The SXT at $30,395 has more interior amenities and exterior enhancements such as fog lights and roof rails. Topping off the lineup is the GT with premium features inside and out and a starting price of $33,395.

On all Grand Caravans, the wheel size is 17 inches. The exterior has a modern look with a gently sloping hood and curved silhouette. On the SXT, the Grand Caravan gets chrome accents and automatic headlights. With the GT, you get a grille that's the same color as the body. Due to these exterior upgrades on the higher trims, the SXT and GT have a more luxurious look.

Because there are no optional engine upgrades, every 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan gets the same engine. The 3.6-liter V6 cranks out 283 horsepower with 260 pound-feet of torque. Power for the front wheels arrives by way of a six-speed automatic transmission.

Thanks to the performance-minded V6, the Grand Caravan offers ample power for acceleration. Even over uneven roads, the Grand Caravan provides a reasonably smooth ride. Handling and responsiveness are on par with other minivans. During third-party evaluations, the Grand Caravan jumped from zero to 60 miles per hour in eight seconds, which is standard for minivans. According to the EPA, this vehicle achieves a combined fuel efficiency rating of 20 miles per gallon.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Grand Caravan's interior is the Stow 'n Go seating. Using a lever, you can make the second-row seats fold into the floor. This convenient feature is standard on all Grand Caravans. Behind the third-row bench, there are 33 cubic feet of storage space. When you lower the back seats, you expand the cargo space to a whopping 143.8 cubic feet. Cargo isn't the only noteworthy cabin feature: On higher trims, you get leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and remote start. Dodge will add a 6.5-inch touch screen later in the model year.

Safety Features

Active head restraints, an array of air bags, antilock brakes, and a stability control system are among the standard safety equipment for the latest Dodge Grand Caravan. Later in the model year, Dodge plans to add a rearview camera as a standard feature. This vehicle has demonstrated braking ability that's consistent with what's acceptable for a minivan. Government safety evaluators gave the Grand Caravan four out of five stars for its overall crash protection.
